SELANGOR OPEN FOX HUNT 2008 RULES AND REGULATIONS

Hi,

for the benefit of all, the rules and regulations are:-

ARDF Competition Rules

1. Name of Competition: Selangor Fox Hunt Year 2008

·         Date   : Sunday July 20th, 2008

·         Time   : 8:30 am

·         Venue : Taman Tasik Titiwangsa Kuala Lumpur

·         Type   : Pedestrian mode.

·         Fees    : RM20 per person/RM80 per team

2. Description

·         This is a competition on Amateur Radio Direction Finding, testing both the skills in Radio Direction Finding and innovation in constructing devices/accessories to enhance or facilitate this activity. 

·         Five low power (<1>

·         Teams will make use of direction finding equipment and techniques to locate these Foxes. 

·         The team who finds all or the most foxes within the shortest time during the period allocated wins the contest.

3. General Competition Rules.


Age: At least 12 years and above at the close of submission for competition.

Contestants will be supplied with:

·         Topographic map of the area to identify the boundary of the hunt area.

·         Scoring card - Teams are required to mark their cards with the marking device found attached to the flags, and return to the marshals at the “Finish” position.

Magnetic compass (self supplied) for navigation purpose may be used.

The choice of clothing and footwear shall be free.

Maximum contest time allowed is 3 hours.

Those teams, who exceed the time limit, will result in disqualification.

 

Team size:-

·         A maximum of 4 persons, of which at least one must be a holder of a valid Radio Amateur license.

·         Teams can only use equipment/devices (as mentioned in 3 above) approved by the Judges.  Teams are to submit the details of equipment/devices (model and make of equipment or circuits and pictures).
Submission of details shall commence on 23rd June 2008 and will be closed on 10 July 2008.  Submissions may be made by hand, post or electronic mail.

Prohibitions

·         Participants are not allowed to transmit during the hunting period or cause damage to the Fox equipments.

·         Competitors shall not inflict loss, damage to the property or any other person.

·         Competitors shall take part at their own risk. They may be required to sign a waiver form.

·         It is absolutely forbidden to give or take any assistance from or to any person, including competitors, and also to utilise any means or method other than permitted. The penalty for both shall be disqualification.

·         However competitors are expected to provide emergency assistance or first aid to another competitor when needed:  no competitor will be disqualified for providing such assistance so long as they gain no competitive advantage by doing so.

·         In the event of a thunderstorm, the chief marshal is entitled to recall the competition immediately.

Dress Code

·         The choice of clothing and footwear shall be free.

 

4. Equipment used for the contest

·         Permitted to use ready-made commercial receivers and antennas. 

·         Handicap in terms of time, will be given for those who use equipment/accessories, be it the receivers and or antenna of 

o        Own design;

o        And/or Own constructed

 

5. Flag-off / Starting Order.

·         The organiser will establish procedures for starting order, start corridors, waiting areas, control of equipment, etc., as appropriate. IARU Region 3 ARDF rules will serve as a guidance.

·         All hunting equipments used in this competition will be impounded before the start of the hunt and will only be returned to the respective teams when they are about to be flag-off.

·         Teams may be flag-off, in 5 ~ 10 minutes intervals, and the flag-off time will be recorded in the “Starting” log as well as on the team’s scorecard.

·         The teams are not allowed to activate their hunting equipment until they have moved off past a specified location.

·         The teams are allowed to hunt the foxes in any order of their preferences.

6. Characteristics/Specifications of the Fox Beacon.

·         The course will have 5 transmitters and the minimum distance between transmitters is 100m. The transmitter closest to the starting point will be at least 250m away. Total course length from start to finish, via all transmitters, between 4 and 7 km.

·         All the foxes will transmit on 144.500 MHz, mode F2A.

·         Transmit a Morse Code identification at approximate rate of 5 words/minute -             MOE, MOI, MOS, MOH, MO5

·         The Foxes will transmit on a running sequential timing pattern of 1 minute "ON" followed by 4 minutes "OFF", as such that there will always a Fox transmitting at all times. (See chart below.)

·         Antenna pattern: Omni-directional.

·         The transmitting antennas shall be installed in a "Horizontal Polarised" position, at a height not exceeding 1.5m from the ground.

·         A diagonally separated white and red flag with a marking tool attached, will be placed not more than 2m away from the transmitting antenna.

·         A homing beacon (id: MO ), located at the “Finish” position, may be deployed to direct the hunters back. This beacon will be on another frequency, say 145.50 MHz.

7. Judging.

A panel of Judges will be appointed to tally the results scored by each team.
This will be based on

·         The number of Foxes scored and the shortest time taken.

·         Design & Construction of own made equipment. ( homebrewed )

 

o        Antenna   - Handicap 10 minutes

o        Receiver   - Handicap 20 minutes

 

·         Most uniquely and practical equipment used in the hunt.

 

Teams are to adhere to the spirit of good sportsmanship and healthy competition. 

Judges reserve the right to disqualify any teams if in its opinion the conduct is found to breach this spirit.

The decisions of the Judges/Marshals and organisers shall be final and binding on all.

 

8. Prizes to be won.

·         All eligible teams who participated and did not break any rules will be given certificates of participation

·         Prizes will be given to the top three highest points gathered in the contest:
